Flood Repair Works - Largest Project Award

Warrego Highway - Roma to Jackson

Following the devastating floods that took place in Queensland during 2010/2011, the Federal Government has provided funding for a massive road rebuild program under the NDRRA (Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements) banner.

These funds flowed swiftly to the Department of Transport and Main Roads in Queensland and they have been quick off the mark to get the repair projects underway across the flood ravaged State.

Probuild Civil (QLD) Pty Ltd's history of successfully building roads in Queensland for the State Government for over 27 years was one of the key reasons for it being awarded on 13 May 2011, a $75 million project for the rehabilitation of 90km of road on the Warrego Highway between Roma and Jackson in the Western Darling Downs region of south western Queensland.

This is currently the largest project ever awarded to Probuild Civil (QLD) Pty Ltd.

The project is to be constructed under a very tight six month time frame, requiring simultaneous activities on six different work fronts.

Notwithstanding that the works are to be constructed under traffic, the maximum permissible total delay to traffic over the entire 90km of road has been nominated at only 20 minutes. Twenty full time traffic controllers will be on site to achieve this key performance area requirement!

Good upfront planning and the acquiring of key resources in this remote area are the elements that are necessary for a successful outcome on the project.

Two hundred and twenty thousand tonnes of a combination of bitumen treated base (BTB) and asphalt requires full production from the existing local asphalt plant in the region, plus that from a second mobile plant to be set up specifically for the project. The targeted average BTB output is 2,500 tonnes per day.

Other interesting quantities on the project are 158km of side drains to be cleaned, over one million square meters of sprayed bituminous surfacing (requiring 550,000 liters of bitumen) and 240km of line marking.

The project is being carried out under a Cost Reimbursable model with a final target cost that if beaten, will result in the client and contractor mutually benefitting from the savings achieved.
